Barrett Esophagus - RadioFrequency Ablation

The registration project "Barrett Esophagus - RadioFrequency Ablation" (BE-RFA) is an initiative of the National Institute for Health and Disability Insurance (Rijksinstituut voor ziekte- en invaliditeitsverzekering) (RIZIV/INAMI) in collaboration with the medical centers that are recognized by the RIZIV/INAMI to perform radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for Barrett esophagus.

The medical centers recognized by the RIZIV/INAMI where RFA is being performed, need to register all entitled persons with Barrett esophagus within this registration project in order to be able to benefit from a compensation of the compulsory insurance for the prestations concerning catheters for RFA for Barrett esophagus.

This registration project is available online since October 2018 and includes all patients for whom one or more RFA treatments were performed since April 1st, 2016. Registration takes place via the Web Based Cancer Registration (WBCR) application of the Belgian Cancer Registry (project module BE-RFA). More information about the usage of this application is available in the BE-RFA WBCR manual (Dutch/French).

The BE-RFA project module contains both a primary registration form and a follow-up registration form, in which the following information need to be registered: indication, anatomopathological staging, type of treatment, result and complications.

The primary registration form consists out of 2 parts that each need to be completed and sent separately and at different timepoints.

  • Part I collects information regarding patient' medical history and the first RFA treatment session (RFA1). This part needs to be completed and send as soon as possible.
  • Part II collects information regarding additional RFA treatment sessions (RFA2 - RFA8) and should only be completed if more than 1 RFA session is performed. In order to complete part II a new primary registration form should be started.
The primary registration form can include up to eight different RFA treatment sessions

The follow-up registration form needs to be filled out yearly for the first two years and every two years afterwards (i.e. 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, ... years after the last RFA session). It contains information about all follow-up endoscopies that were performed during a certain follow-up period.

Extensive information about the variables to be registered within the BE-RFA project module and some 'frequently asked questions' are available in the BE-RFA project manual.

The BE-RFA registration module is only available in English and is accessible to all WBCR users.
